Councillors are good value for money but there should be fewer of them
Last week the list of allowances paid to councillors in Brighton and Hove was published. The total claimed by the 54 councillors was £1,009,628. All councillors received a basic allowance of £14,139. Some councillors receive further allowances for special responsibilities. Inevitably, and quite correctly, it was the leader of the council, Bella Sankey, who received the largest payment, a total of £50,862, followed by the two deputy leaders, Jacob Taylor (£31,172) and Gill Williams (£30,783). Included in these three payments are special responsibility payments of £35,975 for Cllr Sankey and £16,996 for councillors Taylor and Williams.
